What’s New in NetBackup Appliance 3.1

A quick summary of the latest release

The NetBackup Appliance 3.1 release went GA last week.  This release packs quite a punch with a lot of enhancements to both the hardware and software. Let’s take a look at what you can expect to find.

NetBackup 5340 Appliance – The next release in the 5300 Series comes with more processing power, more memory (about 5x), 16Gbps backend storage connections, and increased capacity topping out at 1920 TB. That’s close to 20 PB of logical capacity!

NetBackup 5330 Appliance – Increased maximum capacity to 1.3 PB

NetBackup 5240 Appliance – Increased maximum capacity to 300 TB

High Availability for the NetBackup 5330 and 5340 – Built on Veritas Cluster Technology, this feature enables high availability and load balancing capabilities for these already high performance appliances.

NetBackup Virtual Appliance for data centers – Expanding on the NetBackup Virtual Appliance for ROBO, this edition allows you to protect more data inside your data center by assigning your own storage to the appliance virtual machine.

NetBackup Universal Share – Ever since the release of the NetBackup Appliances customer have been asking for this feature. The ability to mount the appliances storage as NFS/CIFS enables the protection of databases where no agent or backup API exists.

NetBackup Oracle Instant Recovery – Building on the features of Oracle CoPilot, this edition will allow you to start up your database directly from Appliance storage. As with VMware instant recover I suggest to use this feature for DR verification as performance will be reduced.

Centralized Appliance Management – Anyone with more than 3 appliances will know that the installation of patches and upgrades can be a lengthy process. With the release of 3.1 you can designate an appliance as a management appliance. From this management appliance you can now centrally manage updates, upgrade, eeb’s and deploy them to the remaining appliances, all from a single console.
